Driver : Lee Michael
Lee has been involved in sports car racing literally all his life. Both of his parents began road racing with their brand new 1958 Triumph TR-3, and during the 1961
season, Lee was a passenger in his mother’s womb during several races! His parents raced many different European makes including Triumph, MG, Fiat, Simca, Porsche,
BMW, and even a Formula Vee. With Lee’s father owning his own foreign car repair shop, Lee grew up around, in, and under some of the finest, and worst, European
and Japanese cars ever made.
Lee began his autocrossing career when he was just 16, just 2 weeks after receiving his driver’s license. When he was 15, he had purchased and begun modified
his first beloved Datsun 510. Before his 18th birthday, he and his father built Lee’s first road racing car, another Datsun 510. Just a few weeks after his
18th birthday, Lee was competing in his first road race!
Life, family, and the reality of earning a real living derailed Lee’s dream of competing at the 24 Hours of LeMans and other endurance events throughout
the world. But since those early days, Lee has competed in many seasons of autocrossing and road racing in Datsun 510s and 240Zs. Lee even spent a couple
of seasons running a Pure Stock Datsun 510 at a NASCAR-sanctioned ½ mile tri-oval.
When Lee moved to Colorado in 1997 he tried to give up racing, (BTW, golf is a poor substitute for racing!). In 2001, Lee bought a red 1993 BMW 325is
for a daily driver and, unable to resist the racing urge any longer, finally started autocrossing the completely stock BMW in 2003 with the Rocky Mountain
Chapter of the BMW Car Club of America. Since then, Lee has continued to autocross “the red car”. Lee decided to take his BMW into SCCA’s STX class
during the winter of 2004 and ran his first STX season in 2005. The car seemed competitive locally, so Lee continued to upgrade the car with an
eventual goal of competing at the SCCA Solo National Championships. In 2007, Lee and his friend and co-driver David Jobusch, attended the
National Championships for the first time, and David trophied and finished 7th in STX, Lee was 23rd. Lee and David drive the car at the National
Championships in 2008 and 2009, and the results were not as expected. Keep an eye on the car in 2010, though!
Lee’s current daily driver is an Avus Blue 1995 BMW M3. This car is well prepped for STU, so you never know where and when you might see it.
Lee is very excited to join the SCR Performance team of drivers for the 2010 season! Look for great things to come!
