Doughnuts never tasted so good!

After Rebecca made her final call, "left six into finish", we both could see that checkered flag. I accelerated as fast as the MINI could go at 14,110 feet elevation and crossed that finish line. Rebecca and I were shrieking and sobbing as we made our way to the parking area. We jumped out of the car and embraced each other with a much deserved celebratory hug. We had did it, we had finished the 88th Running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. And as far as our records can tell, I am the youngest driver to ever finish that race. Class competitor Jeff Zwart had just set a class record on the mountain and both of us were very excited. Jeff and I hugged and giggled as we made our way over to the media to complete the requested interviews. Right after the interviews Rebecca and I headed directly to the Summit House. It was doughnut time!

Last night, the team and the a few of our contributors enjoyed a delightful dinner at the home of Pat Holmes. Not only was Pat kind enough to let us set up home at his shop, Don's Body Shop, a really nice space for the team to be able to use. When Rebecca and I got back to the hotel room we took time to review the in car video from all of the practice days.

Wake up came a bit later this morning. I am incredibly grateful for our AMAZING crew. They got up early this morning and set up the pit area and allowed Rebecca and I sleep in a bit longer and get some much needed rest. Everything this morning was great. From attending the drivers meeting to signing the programs for the fans; nothing could have been better. We were so very lucky to Pikes Peak and Mother Nature were on our sides today.

After and incredible amount of anticipation, Rebecca and I pulled up to the start line. This was it. Three deep breathes and a couple cross-crawls later we were off. Although I had convinced myself that I wasn't nervous; at one point pulling out of a turn when my foot was on the throttle I could feel it shaking. We both we able to find success by just working through the mountain section by section. We got through the first third and I was like "oh my gosh...this is really happening". Pat Holmes had taken time to speak with me about his experience with the Hill Climb and was able to give me some great advice about not letting the spectators on the side of the road affect my race. His advice was very helpful, and I was able to successfully complete each sections. When we made it to the last section of asphalt I knew we had it. I kept telling myself just to breath and focus, I didn't want to come that far and loose it at that point.

I have this favorite turn right near the summit that I really enjoy driving through. The turn is called Cog Cut because drivers can see the historic Pikes Peak Cog Railway from that section of the road. The Cog happened to just be there as I was driving through the turn and it made me very excited. As we flew through the finish, the tears just couldn't help but start to fall. As I jumped of the car I was embracing other drivers who I had never met before. It was a totally euphoric atmosphere.

It was the greatest moment of my racing career.

We purchased doughnuts for the crew down at the bottom and enjoyed a couple ourselves. What a great feeling. I enjoyed watching all of the drivers whom I have so much respect for cross that finish line one by one.

After all the cars had reached the summit we all began our descend downhill. I was very excited, the parade downhill was a moment that I had been waiting for for years. Seeing all of those faces just triggered the tears again. I am a very lucky person and I was grateful to see so many familiar faces on the way down. You guys rock! Seeing my parents and brother at 8 Mile was emotional! It was incredible, I couldn't believe that I had actually done it. I had finished the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. We reached the bottom of the mountain and gave all of the guys with the Hill Climb warm handshakes as I pulled into the pits. I couldn't get out of the car fast enough. I gave Mark Baer a giant hug and I began to sob again. After many hugs and many more teams, Grant and Mark broke out the champagne and the sparkling cider for a much earned celebration!

We attended the awards ceremony. It was great seeing all of the drivers and being able to talk about their runs once we had all had the chance to cool down. Congratulations to each and every winner in this years race. You all are incredible! At the ceremony; I was also very honored to be awarded the 2010 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Rookie of the Year award. Thank you to everyone who made that possible.

We finished third in the Time Attack 2WD Class with a time of 13:58.232 over a 12.42 mile course with 156 turns. Enjoy the pictures! And join me in celebrating this very successful running of Pikes Peak. We are looking forward to going back next year!

Thank you to all of the sponsors, all of the crew, all of my family and friends, and everyone who has every believed in me. This happened because of you.

Power Steering, Marmots, and Pushups

Today was a beautiful day up on Pikes Peak! The weather conditions held up and practice went very well. The alarms went off this morning at 2:30 AM, but both Rebecca and I hopped out of bed- anxious to start the day! When we participated in practice on June 5th and 6th Rebecca and I both we really affected by the altitude. To make sure that there would be nothing holding us back, we had bagels with peanut butter along with some fruit and other breakfast things to get the day started.

After passing through the Toll Gate we met up with the team just before Crystal Reservoir and unloaded the car and got everything ready to go. There were about thirty cars running in our run group. Once arriving in the designated pit area for the middle section, all of the teams began unloading and prepping everything. The drivers and co-drivers then met up for a quick drivers meeting. At this point, the sun was finally starting to peek up, and they told us to hop in the cars! The middle section is a series of lots of hairpins with a few fast stretches connecting. It is a very fast, and very fun section that is entirely paved. During our first run up the mountain the goal was to just shake down the car, make sure everything was running good and to make sure that Rebecca and I were mentally and physically prepared for the task ahead. First run went great, there is always that sense of accomplishment when you reach that checkered flag!

After a few runs, as we were coming down the mountain we started to feel the power steering cutting out on the car a bit. When we got down to the bottom Mark, Grant, and Tyler took a look at the car and concluded the the temps were a bit hot the fluids. They advised me that by keeping the RPM's up on the car that we would be able to have the power steering work a bit better. As long as it wasn't affecting our runs up the mountain, Rebecca and I decided to head back up! We had several very solid runs that showed improvement each time we ran the section. We were having an excellent fourth run, but near the top the power steering started to cut out. The lack of power steering through those sections made me very grateful to have the power steering on the car, and it provided quite the workout for my upper body. Rebecca ordered that I'll be doing push ups in the hotel room tonight to build up those biceps! I am very thankful that I have been working hard at THE Women's Gym so that my upper body was in as good of condition as it was. While Grant ran up to Loveland to make sure we had extra parts if needed, Tyler and Mark cleared the power steering fan of all the rocks that it had collected- most likely the problem of the over heating.

Rebecca and I then took a bit of time to go up on the mountain after practice concluded and took take a look at the road...and the wildlife! A car filled with tourists brought to our attention that there was a cute little Marmot running along the side of the road. Since while we are racing we don't have time to look at these little creatures Rebecca and I stopped to adore him. He then ran under the car and we had to sit there while waiting for him to realize we didn't have any food...and he moved on to the next batch of tourists. Pictures are attached!

The two of us then headed back to the shop and the team had a wonderful lunch prepared for us. Special thanks to Danelle, Mark Baer's sister, for providing such excellent hospitality. Colorado Spring's Channel 11 then met with us to conduct a quick interview with Rebecca and I after catching some footage of us running up the mountain. At this point we were feeling pretty tired and pretty in need of a shower and a nap. After the naps, we met with a photographer from the Denver Post who will be able to put the final touches on a piece that is running later this week. (Keep an eye out!!)

The rest of the day went smoothly, and we are looking forward to another practice run tomorrow morning on the upper section of the mountain. Following practice tomorrow Rebecca and I will attend a Press Conference hosted at the Crowne Plaza.

We are here...and we're ready to ROCK

We are here....we are settled in...and we are READY TO ROCK!!

Today was a very successful day! Mark Baer and Grant Barclay went down with the race car this morning to run through tech. After arriving in Colorado Springs they were able to stop by our host shop, Don's Body Shop in Manitou Springs, to make sure the car was totally prepared for tech. The team obviously did a great job preparing the car, as the car passed through the PPIHC Tech with no problems. Mark and Grant then headed back to Don's Body Shop to finish setting up camp for the remainder of the week.

Meanwhile, Rebecca and I met up in the Springs. We then headed up to take one final look at Pikes Peak before practice begins early tomorrow morning. The road conditions were looking great!! Last week the Highway Department laid down magnesium chloride on the dirt in the middle section. The magnesium chloride was able to harden the surface, it now almost appears as to be paved. This is great news for us, because the MINI is a lot faster on the pavement than on the dirt. No one is quite sure how long the magnesium will last on the road, there is a chance that is may not be on the surface still come race day on Sunday. But, it is a condition that we will enjoy practicing on, and one that we will keep our eyes on as the week continues.

On our way down the mountain Rebecca and I spotted a familiar face standing off the road at bottomless pit. The well known and very well respected Nobuhiro Tajima, who is the current record holder on Pikes Peak, was spending time with some of his crew. Rebecca and I enjoyed this opportunity to introduce ourselves and to talk about the current road conditions.

After finishing up on the mountain Rebecca and I drove to the Crowne Plaza hotel to get all registered. Registration went very smoothly, and we received our race credentials for the week. We then attended the Rookie Meeting and the Driver's Meeting. At both meetings we were able to gain very important information about the week. After finishing up at the Crowne Plaza we drove back to Don's Body Shop. The team was there busily making sure everything was ready to go come morning. We enjoyed a wonderfully prepared meal, and then hopped in the "Official Savannah Rickli Transport Vehicle" and headed back to the hotel. Thank you to MINI of Loveland for providing such awesome transportation for the week! (Pictures attached!)

Rebecca and I are both really looking forward to tomorrow's practice on the Middle Section. Can't wait to shake down the car and stating getting in the swing of things for this years Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

Once again, thanks for the continued support!

Peak Week is Here

Wow... I cannot believe that it is already time for the Peak Week! The official race week of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is finally upon us! I would like to extend my great appreciation to the people and the supporters who have helped get me to this place in my life! When I approached Grant Barclay in January about my desire to run the Hill Climb, I didn't think he would take me seriously and I sure didn't think that six months later I would be preparing for my Rookie year up the hill!

Teaming up with SCR Motorsport in February was an excellent boost to the season! I cannot thank Mark Baer and Grant Barclay enough for the immense support that they have shown and given to me in the last four months. Working together as a team, we have been able to make some incredible things happen.

I would also like to thank all of my sponsors for this season. I couldn't be any happier to have MINI of Loveland on board with us! Please visit www.MINIofloveland.com for more information on this unique MINI Dealership! To everyone at SCR Performance and Built-By-Bones who have worked on the car to make sure it was fully prepared for the weekend. THE Women's Gym has been an irreplaceable tool in the preparation for this very physically demanding event. Not to mention the support from every single person who has purchased a supporter shirt for the season. I am so incredibly grateful for the support that everyone has shown me. I'm the luckiest girl alive!

Bright and early tomorrow morning I am heading down to Colorado Springs for the week. My navigator Rebecca and I are meeting early to take one last cruise up the mountain to make sure that our notes are in tip-top shape. After that, we will attend the Rookie Meeting that will be followed by the Driver's Meeting for the event tomorrow evening. The team will meet for dinner tomorrow evening, and make sure that we are ready for the crazy week ahead of us! Practice will start bright (well..not quite bright!!) and early on Tuesday morning. We will be meeting with the team at 3:30 AM to head up to the mountain! On Wednesday morning our class will be in the Middle Section of the mountain. Practice on Thursday will be on the Top Section and Friday we will be on the lower section of the mountain.

On Friday evening I would like to invite everyone to attend Fan Fest. Fan Fest is quite the event that is held as a kick off to the race in Downtown Colorado Springs. This event is FREE and typically features a large Budweiser beer garden, live bands, chili cook-off, motorcycle jumpers and Denver Bronco cheerleaders as well as other live entertainment. In addition, the PPIHC mobile museum will be on-site and exclusive PPIHC merchandise will be available for purchase. I will be present at the event with the MINI of Loveland MINI Cooper signing autographs and passing out coloring pages for the little ones (and the little ones at heart!).

Saturday morning I will be doing a LIVE interview with Denver's Channel 9. The interview will be on LIVE at 7:20 AM, for those of you in Denver please be sure to set the DVR not to miss the interview!

Sunday will be race day! We are looking forward to a very exciting event, full of good times and good memories! I am hoping to see several familiar faces out in the crowd! If you are able to attend the race please be sure to stop by and say hello and meet the team!

I will be sending out daily updates for the remainder of race week. If you would rather not receive a daily blog update, please let me know and I will remove you from the list! Also, please feel free to forward this to anyone else you who think might enjoy reading the inside scoop of the 2010 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb! Once again, thank you for all of your continued support!

On the Hill

June 5th and 6th were Official Practice Days for the Hill Climb. Pikes Peak is a race that pushes drivers, and I am starting to fully understand why. On Friday evening I had the chance to drive down a bit early and get one last look at the road. The team then met at Don's Body Shop in Manitou Springs. It was nice to be able to have a home base down in Colorado Springs at the shop- so thanks to them for helping us out! Friday evening the team had a great time at dinner, we enjoyed telling stories and preparing ourselves for the next two days.

On Saturday Morning the alarms went off at 2:45 AM. Though it was really early, Rebecca and I were ready to get in the car! Though she and I had spent quite a bit of time together, we had never sat in a race car together. We stopped for a quick cup of coffee and headed to the mountain. We were so excited that we were there quite a bit early, we sat in the car as the other officials and drivers started lining up. Unloading the car under the bright, shining Pikes Peak Stars was incredible, and hearing the Mini Cooper's engine break the silence of the night was great!

There were about ten cars at practice, and on Saturday morning the cars were racing in the lower half of the mountain: Seven Mile at the Start Line up to just past Glen Cove (around thirteen mile) of the mountain. In the lower half of the mountain there is a significant section of dirt. I have quite a bit of experience on asphalt, but the dirt was new to me. We got strapped in and finally left the starting line. Communication system all hooked up, Rebecca started reading me the notes that we had composed together for the Pikes Peak Highway. The asphalt was fun, it was great to feel the Mini hug the corners and accelerate through the kinks. When we got to dirt it was a bit of a shock for me feeling how little grip that the car had. We were able to make it the designated finish line and Rebecca and I had a chance to talk a bit about the characteristics of the dirt. After a quick two more runs, the team put new tires on to help us get an idea of what tires to run during race week. The second set of tires felt much better, and we were able to carry a bit more speed. Throughout Saturdays practice session I was able to learn a lot about the car, and the dirt, and starting improving on times and gaining more and more comfort on the mountain. Rebecca Greek is a very talented co-driver and navigator and I am very lucky to have her in the car with me. The relationship we have is very strong, and will help us reach our goals on the mountain!

On Sunday we were on the Upper half of the mountain. There was still the combination of dirt and asphalt on that section. Because it was right at sunrise, the sun played a bit of a role in the practice, vision was affected. Jeff Zwart who will be racing in the same class at the hill climb came over and gave me some much needed pointers on avoiding the glare of the sun- they really helped! All of the drivers who were at the test were very supportive and really willing to give me some advice on racing the mountain. I am looking forward to being part of the race with Spencer Steele, Jimmy Olson, Mike Ryan, Paul Dallenbach, and Jeff Zwart! I was able to continue gaining comfort with driving on dirt, and working with Rebecca. A successful practice weekend was then celebrated with the team- here's to the 2010 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb!!

One thing that really surprised me was how much the altitude took a toll on my body. It was important to remember to stay very hydrated and get good protein in the body. After a full weekend of practice, I have a better idea of where I physically need to be by Peak Week and Race Day. I will continue to work hard with my personal trainer at THE Women's Gym in order to be totally prepared for the race.

Getting Closer...

Today Rebecca and I were able to make it down to Colorado Springs. We met and interviewed with Cheng Sio of the Colorado Springs Gazette and we were able to spend some time training on Pikes Peak. We both are feeling a lot more comfortable with each other in the car. We were able to modify the rally notes that she has from previous years to help me to the best of their ability. The road conditions were ideal today, we can only hope for such good weather on race day!

I cannot believe that practice is only two weeks away! Time sure does fly. I am looking forward to spending all of next weekend doing racing related activites, all aimed at helping me succeed on Pikes Peak.

[2010.05.13]
Licensed!

Another weekend has passed, and the team continues to make strides towards our season goals. I really enjoyed my first race weekend with the SCCA and I am looking forward to racing with them in the future.

We took the second half of Friday to spend some time on track at High Plains Raceway. It was great that the track had the full course open. I hadn't had the chance to run the full course since last Fall, and I enjoyed the refresher. The day also provided a few good lessons on tire management. The Channel 9News crew was there to get the final footage for their feature that will be running later this month, Friday May 21st.

On Saturday morning I woke up very excited for my first official race! The car had been feeling good on Friday, and I was feeling mentally present. The first practice session on Saturday provided a bit of excitement. While exiting the track the Mini Cooper had a bit of contact with a Spec Miata. Though both cars have damage, neither drivers were injured. SCR Performance's awesome crew was able to get the car into a drivable condition for the first qualifying session. The qualifying session went okay. There were a few decent lap times put down, but nothing exceptional. After debriefing the with team, I learned by Sunday to utilize hot pit lane to get space during qualifying to have a few solid, clean laps. Saturday's rolling start provided a bit of an initial struggle to the race. After losing quite a bit of time on the start, I soon found myself near the back of the pack. By the end of the race I was able to make up quite a bit of positions back- and relished in the passing practice. I finished second in class, and was able to secure my first race finish necessary for my regional competition license. Saturday evening I left the track before the evening festivities to go home and get a good night's sleep, and to spend some time relaxing with the family.

On Sunday morning the weather was a lot nicer. It was great to see the sun, and the wind was finally calming down. The first practice session out on track felt really good. I was able to work my confidence back up on track and in the car. The qualifying session was very good. Finding some clean track time I was able to throw down several consistent lap times. My qualifying postion for Sunday's race was a lot stronger, and I was able to drive the start a lot better. Sunday I found a second in class finish, as well as the completion of my second and final race needed to complete my regional competition license requirements.

The team made great strides this weekend, and I am looking forward to future races. I see nothing but improvement in lap times and track performance in the future. I am so very fortunate to have the support of SCR Performance and Built-By-Bones. The Pike's Peak Hill Climb is rapidly approaching, and I'm spending time watching the track videos and planning several trips down to Colorado Springs within the next week.

Best of luck to our Pike's Peak Co-Driver Rebecca Greek and Roger Matthews at the Oregon Trail Rally this weekend! I'm looking forward to following their success.

Plugging Along

Things have been continued to keep plugging along. On Friday evening I really enjoyed the modified SCR BBQ in Loveland. Though we were bummed about the weather, SCR Performance handled the situation to the best of their ability with hosting the event at the Pourhouse in Loveland. It was great to be able to spend some time with such a great group of people who are working so very hard to push me towards the direction of my dreams.

Today, Sunday, I was able to drive up Pikes Peak with co-driver Rebecca Greek. Due to recent snow on the mountain, the road was only open to Glen Cove (13 mile) or about half way up the mountain. Rebecca and I enjoyed the chance to start working with each other and learning how to communicate well with each other. We made three runs up the section of the mountain. The dirt section of the road was very slippery and wet...made for an interesting drive in the little miata (which desperatley needs a carwash now). Though the road conditions we not ideal, it was great being able to experiement a bit with the characteristics of a dirt road and how a wet dirt road drivers differently than a wet paved road. Rebecca and I are looking forward to being able to drive the mountain within the next few weeks, and hope that by then the mountain will be open to the top.

Looking forward to being part of the Ross Bently driving seminars next weekend. It should be a great opportunity to learn more about life behind the wheel.

Post DAS Update - by Grant Barclay

Denver Auto Show - wow, what an amazing unveiling we had at the DAS on Friday April 9th. Rebecca and Savannah were both looking great in their driving suits, and I would guesstimate we had 75 - 100 people around the stand when the covers came off. Everyone commented on the roof graphic wrap - a course map of the hill climb - it looks superb, thanks to Randy and Grant at Action Signs in Ft Collins.

First time Savannah saw her name on the car. The pictures and crayons went over really well with the youngsters, and we ran out of driver hero cards on the first evening. We also handed out many of the PPIHC programs over the weekend, and made some excellent contacts for sponsorhsip. The DAS was definitely a resounding success, and Savannah has been asked to assist the Colorado State Patrol with their "take it to the track" campaign as a direct result of being at the show. It was really cool to see the huge turnout from the Solo community who are whole heartedly supporting Savannah and Mark and I. thanks guys!

Not really anything exciting during this week. Car was loaded in Denver on Sunday night, first car out of the DAS, a record in itself. The planned maintenance, fluid changes, corner weighting, and setup, have been delayed as the Built-By-Bones shop is slammed with fabrication work for another Pikes Peak competitor, David Kern. The maintenance, and a thorough cleaning to remove the grime and handprints from DAS, will be done in time for the SCR Performance BBQ next friday April 23rd. All the SCR drivers will be introduced, and it will be a second time for the northern colorado enthusiasts to meet and greet with Savannah.

There was some progress on raising funds this week, with a local online car magazine, joining the project to help promote Savannah.

Savannah's training in the next few weeks will include:
  • back to basics, running an autocross with RMSolo on April 17,
  • another look at the mountain, road car recce on Pikes Peak on Sunday April 18
  • video analysis of the course, ongoing
  • take it to the track with Colorado State Patrol due to debut on Wed April 21st.
  • ongoing fitness regime

one exciting aspect of the project is the attention it is drawing from established drivers. Several drivers with hill climb experience have offered to assist Savannah, and there have been enquiries from some hot shoes as to whether SCR Performance can support additional entries in PPIHC this year. While it is getting close to the event, it is possible that there may be another car in our stable by the time of the hill climb, and another experienced driver available to mentor Savannah as she races toward her dream.

Pre DAS Update - by Savannah

This has been a very busy and very productive week for the team and the Pikes Peak Project. On Thursday Channel 9News Reporter Anastasiya Bolton and a cameraman spent the majority of the day following me with cameras at school. The crew is also looking to put together footage from the track to compile into a feature about me and what I am doing. At the school they spent some time just following me through the halls, and a bit of time just recording from several different angles in class, the majority of their time was spent in my Honors Physics class. Near the end"of class they spent some time interviewing my lab partner in the class and one of my friends in the class. After class was over I spent my lunch block doing about a forty minute on camera interview with the crew. Overall, I think that they day went really well and I am looking forward to seeing the piece put together and ready to air in later in May.

Friday evening was the official unveiling of the Pikes Peak Project as part of the Denver Auto Show at the Colorado Convention Center. The unveiling was a huge success! Within about twenty minutes of the unveiling all of the "limited production" hero cards were gone, and my sharpie was low on ink from signing autographs. It was great that my co-driver for Pikes Peak, Rebecca Greek, was able to make the event. At the unveiling I was very surprises (and excited!) to see the new graphics on the car, and the track map of Pikes Peak on the roof is a must see! I was really honored to be part of the Denver Auto Show. Special thanks to SCCA for supporting my career in previous years, and for allowing the car to be on display at their booth. SCCA has really been an incredible organization to work for. I spent about three hours at the show on Friday and two hours at the show on both Saturday and Sunday, and what an experience it was to be able to do that. I really enjoyed meeting so many people, and seeing kid's faces light up as they strolled past the race car. I have always had a great appreciation for the historical aspect of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, but it was really incredible listening to everyone share their experiences with or memories of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. It was great to be able to have the chance to promote both SCCA, the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, and myself at the Denver Auto Show this past weekend.

Things are definitely happening for the team, and I am really looking forward to next weekend, and the weeks to come in these few final months before the Pikes Peak Hill Climb.
