This is our 1997 A4 1.8T Quattro that started out at the beginning of '09 as a bone stock street car. It is now well on its way to being a full-out race car, which
will be running races around the front range in 2010. As with any racing machine, it will never be truly "done" per se, as development always continues in the search
for more laptime, but for now, the car is already turning competitive GTS laptimes with very little track time thus far.
Interior
True to its goal as a full time racing machine, the interior of the car has been completely stripped, including all the wiring and sound deadening material. Built-By-Bones
fabricated and installed the roll cage, and in place of the various body wiring harnesses, we made a custom wiring harness to run only the necessaries - engine and instrumentation.
Sparco Pro 2000 seats, Sparco steering wheel, and Stack gauges keep an eye on engine vitals for the driver.
Drivetrain
Underneath the car, we began with a Stasis 4:1 Center Diff, 034 Track Density motor and trans mounts, Apikol billet diff mount and poly bushings, 034 aluminum front and rear
subframe bushings, and an OEM carbon fiber driveshaft. The switchgear is a B∓M short throw shifter, driving the gearbox connected to an OEM RS4 clutch kit on a ECS
aluminum flywheel.
Suspension
The foundation of the car's suspension is a set of KW V3 coilover springs and shocks. To that, we added 2Bennett adjustable front upper control arms, 034 heim jointed front
lower control arms, Hotchkis sway bars, SCR adjustable rear sway bar end links, and solid front sway bar end links. These parts together should give us excellent adjustability
to tune balance between the bars and shocks, and the replaced control arms bring the geometry back in line for the benefit of bump steer and camber curves.
Brakes
To get all of this whoa'd down for the braking zones, we went with the excellent Stoptech ST40 332mm big brake kit on the front, on the rear, a B7 S4 rear brake conversion, with
stainless lines all around to improve pedal feel and modulation. We also removed the factory ABS system and made custom brakes lines plumbed through a pair of Tilton
brake bias adjusters.
Engine
A car's powerplant is one of the most important aspects to making fast laptimes possible. For the car's first iteration, we decided to go with a well-proven system, in order to
maximize the car's track time during initial development of the suspension. We started with an APR stage 3+ turbo kit retrofitted to an AEB-spec 1.8T engine. The engine was
torn down and rebuilt with Scat connecting rods for added strength and reliability, but otherwise left largely alone.
The turbo kit includes a GT28RS turbo, cast inconel exhaust
manifold, fuel injectors, 2.5 inch test pipe, braided stainless oil and coolant lines, silicone inlet hose, bigger MAF housing and the all important software. We also fabbed a
custom oil cooler setup mounted in the stock intercooler location. Next we made our own custom intercooler kit with a 24x11x3 bell core and end tanks, 2.5 inch aluminum intercooler
pipes and an APR R1 diverter valve relocated to the cold side pipes. We used a Carbonio air box setup with an SCR lid and 2.5 inch ram air inlet pipe through the headlight.
We currently have an APR exhaust system on the car but will be replacing it with our own custom system soon.
Body
The body of the car is fairly stock but will be upgraded with light weight carbon panels in the future. We currently have an RS4 front bumper, badgeless RS4 grill, and a carbon
sunroof delete panel installed. We have also skinned the doors and installed lexan windows in the rear doors as part of the effort towards reducing the car's weight.
