While most drivers understand the importance of a routine oil change, brake fluid is almost always neglected, even though it plays an important role in your vehicle’s braking system. At SCR Performance in Loveland, our car maintenance professionals understand the importance of proper brake fluid maintenance, and have some answers to common brake fluid questions below.

What Does Brake Fluid Do?

Also known as hydraulic fluid, brake fluids help efficiently move components in your vehicle’s braking system. This fluid operates especially well under high temperatures and high pressures, and without it, you’re car won’t be able to stop.

European car maintenanceAre There Different Types Of Brake Fluid?

While there is a wide variety of brake fluids on the market today, there are two primary types of brake fluid.

Glycol-based Brake Fluid: Typically used in cars with anti-lock brake systems (ABS), glycol-based brake fluids can further be divided by grade. They are named by DOT (Department of Transportation coding) followed by a number between three and five. The higher the number, the greater the quality of brake fluid.

Silicone Brake Fluid: This type of brake fluid will only work in cars and trucks without ABS technology. To figure out which type of brake fluid is best for your vehicle, consult your car’s owner’s manual or contact the professionals at SCR Performance.

How Often Should I Get My Brake Fluid Changed?

Over the course of time, the brake fluid in your car will absorb moisture from the air, which can cause the fluid to degrade and lose its properties. This is why it is important to schedule routine brake oil flushes in order to drain the old oil out, and replace it with new fluid.

If you’re considering flushing your brake fluid, or getting your vehicle’s brakes checked for maintenance, SRC Performance can help. Let our auto professionals perform a complete brake system diagnosis to determine the best course of action for your car.
